Holmes the early leader at Players; Woods under par

Tiger Woods had one of his worst tournaments as a professional last week with a 74-79 and a missed cut at the Quail Hollow Championship. A little more than halfway through his first round at the TPC Sawgrass, Woods is two-under par.

Woods, whose only victory at this championship came in 2001, birdied the par- five ninth and 11th holes for his two-under score.

Davis Love III, a two-time winner, joined Holmes in the lead at six-under par.

Jason Bohn, Ben Crane, Heath Slocum and Luke Donald are in the clubhouse at five-under 67.

Masters champion Phil Mickelson had four birdies and two bogeys on Thursday and finished the round at two-under 70.

"Shooting 70 today isn't the round that you want. We came out in perfect conditions," said Mickelson. "But the reason I think this was a good day for me is I just didn't have it. I let a lot of shots slide on the course today around the greens."
